CMD box opens and closes instantly

trying to troubleshoot this PC, I want to get into a command prompt so I can do an ipconfig and some other things. As soon as the box opens up it closes. CMD /? doesn't seem to tell me anything usefull as to how to make the box stay open.

any ideas?

thanks I will try that, I was just in Firefox and when I tried to download Avast, it didn't pop up the usual download box.
