Looking for a psu for my CM stacker 832 case. (case is on its way from newegg)
Im assuming since the case is so large, not all psu's will have long enough cables, so i figured i'd better be sure. ;)

Pc specs.
Cm Stacker 832
7 120mm fans
Q6600
Abit Ip35-e
8GB(4x2b) G-Skill PC2 8000 (yeah, ive got 8gb, so what?, ram is SOOO cheap, so i maxed it!..LOL...and YES...im running Vista 64)
8800GTS 512mb
Three hard drives
Two optical drives (dvd player & a dvd burner)
Creative X-fi

Now , i wanna be sure i have enough power for the future too.
Since i upgrade video cards quite often and sli isnt out of the question in future "uppgrade paths". (never know what mobo i'll buy for my next rebuild, it may be an sli mobo)
And im not beyond going back to watercooling someday especially since the CM stacker 832 has plenty of room for it.

So basically i want MORE than enough to power my current configuration.

How long are the cables on a 520HX? And is that enough psu for two vid cards in the future?

Also, while i'm asking, ive been wanting to know for years...if you have a dual rail PSU, how do you know which cables go to which rails , so you can evenly distribute the power when you hook up your cables?

The HX520/620 ATX cables are 19" in length. Here are some pics of the 832 & HX series psu.

http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?p=592010

While the HX520 would handle your Quad and a pair of 8800GTS, I would go with the HX620 for the additional headroom. If you don't need modular cables go with the TX650. Since all Corsair psu's feature a single 12V rail you don't have to worry about overloading or balancing the power distribution. ;)

According to Newegg both the 620HX and 520HX have three 12V rails.

Saw that too.
Any idea how you know which cables do which rails?

Ive got several dual rail PSU's in our pc's , but i never have any clue what i have hooked to which rail.

No idea yet. I saw your post and it got me thinking because I just purchased a 620HX as part of a build I'm doing. I did find this statement on their site:

"Triple 12V Rails provide independent reliable power to the CPU, video card and other components with a combined rating of 50A (40A on 520W) maximum! Advanced circuitry design that automatically enables power sharing between the triple +12V rails in an event of overload on any single +12V rail. " Link

So it looks like it's not really an issue, but I'd still like to know that information anyway.

[edit]

After some Googling around I think I know what John is talking about. Here is a quote from a review of the 620HX over at Hardocp.com:

"Also, on the secondary side we see our solder points for our three 12v ?rails.? However, as has been demonstrated by others and confirmed by Corsair, this unit is not actually a three rail unit per se as the Over-Current Protection (OCP) is not set on the rails to limit them to 18A as advertised. We will also empirically demonstrate this later during our testing. Here we can also see that the cables are well bundled and they are protected from sharp edges as they exit the casing by a hard plastic guard. "

I've seen similar notes in other reviews. So three rails or not, the unit behaves as if it is a single rail. So no need to worry about the plugs.

The HX520 and HX620 are listed as 3 rails, but they are all connected internally to a single transformer with only a single OCP of the rating of the PSU. So they technically are single rail PSUs, just labeled as triple.

Correct. Some of you may also be interested in reading this post from the Corsair Power Guy that explains why the HX series was changed on the inside but not the outside:

Im still considering what to purchase.
Unfortunately sometimes the more info you get , the harder it is to make a decision.
So im still running my OCZ PowerStream 600-ADJ until i figure out exactly what to buy that i wont "second guess" once i have it.

Ive had the HX520 and HX620 in and out of my cart on Newegg so many times now its just not funny anymore.

So, one last question thats bothering me...
I noticed the Corsair HX520 and HX620 aren't 80 PLUS Certified.
Should i care?

Although the HX520 and HX620 are not 80+ certified, various test sites have tested them and the results showed that these 2 PSUs have efficiency >80% in almost all cases. You can read the review here

I use the HIPER 580 w/modular connections. It reaches just fine in my Stacker 832.

80% efficient means you paid a couple of thousand of dollars, had your PSU tested, and it delivered 80% efficiency at 20/50/80% loads. Corsair apparently didn't bother, but that doesn't mean it can't be 80% efficient. So don't worry about it.
