CM Hyper 212Plus, or OCZ Vendetta, for AM3+ CPU?

Just wondering. I initially was looking at MC for a heatsink for an AM3+ mobo, that latched onto the existing AM3+ mounting brackets. But the guy working there said they all used a bolt-through/backplate arrangement. (I had the 212+ in my hand.)

So I ended up spending $30 + tax on the 212+, thinking it's the popular cooler on these forums.

So later that night, I took a look at an OCZ Vendetta (92mm) cooler that I had. (Bought a whole bunch of these for $10 each a year or two ago when MC was clearing them out.)

Surprise, surprise. They have a latch that attaches to the existing AM3+ brackets!

So, I really don't want to have to take the factory AM3+ mounting brackets off, so I'm leaning towards using the Vendetta instead of the 212+.

Will that heatsink be adequate for a Thuban @ 4.0Ghz?

Edit: I think that the Vendetta has 3 heatpipes, while the 212+ has four.

Doubt it, for two reasons:

1. 92mm Fan
2. 92mm Fan.
3. 92mm fan.

Stick with the 212+ and order an extra fan for a P/P setup.

Setting up heatsinks with AMD brackets sucks anyways...It was easier to put together the Hyper212+ in my case than the AMD stock.

Is it really the fan size that is inadequate? Not the fact that it has one less heatpipe?

Does the 212+ really require TWO fans? That much airflow would change how well it works?

I just got a 2nd fan for my 212+ today from the 'egg. My 2500K was running at almost 80C overclocked at 4.10GHz with just the one fan (using LinX, mind you.) I think a 2nd fan is just cheap insurance. I'll be remounting the 212+ as well, someone here had a very good primer on setting the 212+ up better... I saw it about 3 days after I had mounted mine...

I tend to think that the Vendetta will work fine, but you'll probably looking at slightly higher temps and a louder fan.

If I remember right, the Vendetta had large heatpipes, and the 212+ had smaller heatpipes. I'm not sure what difference the that actually makes though.

I don't mind higher temps, as long as they aren't "over the limit".

I'll try the Vendetta first, and then if it isn't holding the temps low enough, then I'll take the heatsink bracket off, and try the 212+ I guess.

The Vendetta will be fine, you don't need to buy the 212+. I have 2 i5 2500k rigs, one with a Loki hs 92mm and the other with a 212+ 120mm. They both cool my chips almost identically. The 212+ rig is quieter, due to the lower rpm fan.
