Cluster Sizes with Win98

Heyas.

I'm running Windows 98 First Edition.

I went from Dual 15 GB Western Digital HDD's with a Promise Ultra100 "Lite" RAID Controller
to Dual 40 GB but found that I needed to expand the partition size in order to use the entire
drive, so here's what I did..

1. Break the RAID 1 array.
2. Shutdown.
3. Change Jumper on Gigabyte GA-7DXR so that RAID controller turns into ATA-100 controller.4. Remove second 15 GB drive and replace with 40 GB Drive.
5. Boot to DOS and use Partition Magic to copy over the 15 GB partition.
6. Resize copied 15 GB partition to 32 GB. (16 k cluster size.)
7. Make another partition in the remaining space on the drive.
8. Apply Changes. (wait a very long time!)
9. Delete second partition on 40 GB drive.
10. Change cluster size on first partition to 32 k (Didn't get this option the first time.)
11. Resize partition to the full size of the drive.
12. Shutdown and change back to RAID Array.
13. Create RAID 1 array and then duplicate.

This didn't work. Windows simply just wouldn't boot properly. It did boot once but it locked up.
Eventually, as I tried to troubleshoot the problem, more and more errors kept popping up
until finally a good portion of the Windows directory went missing. This leads me to believe that
Windows 98 doesn't like a 32 kb cluster size.
So, I repeated the whole entire process except for steps # 9-13 and just used 16 kb cluster
size and now everything seems to work perfectly.

Has anyone else had issues with this? Does Win98 support 32 kb cluster sizes or was it
actually partition magic (Version 7.0 BTW) that did the damage?

Thanks.

Win98 has no problem with 32KB cluster sizes. More than likely it was Partition Magic that caused the problem.
