I've been thinking about a cloud-based phone system, let me describe it. Tell me what you think. I've been an avid reader of Anandtech forums and now I've finally created an account because I wanted to post this.
As phone functionality are getting into all sorts of form factors, like tablets laptops smartphones tvs etc. There should be a system where you can eliminate the sim card, have the phone work on a cloud-based system. This way, you can assign your phone number (or email address) to many different devices (laptops smartphones tablets, etc.). So when you receive a call, ALL of these devices will ring (most of these devices have mics and speakers anyway, you could have your tv, laptop, multiple phones, tablets, all ring on an incoming phonecall/videocall) and that would be great. Plus you'd be able to make calls with these devices as well. There would also be a "inbox" of sorts of all received calls. International calling wouldn't cost extra and all devices would need to be connected to the internet. Internal calling could be done as well (i.e. from one device to another device).
The SIM card was a great standard but now its technology is very outdated, having only 1 sim card for a single device is insufficient. I really hope the move towards microsim doesn't take off, we should instead move towards the cloud.
I know about Google voice but it's about half way there. Do you like the idea? Would a cloud-based phone system definitely work? Are we actively shifting our phone system to the cloud? How would the phone network companies react? What problems would arise?
