I hadn't heard about this before, I do remember Panda being a big resource hog.

Yeah, that site or their servers are seriously screwed up.

Edit: Hmmm...it just started working properly again.

I'm pretty happy with Avira. It would take one hell of an antivirus to get me to switch. It's good to see other free options available though.

If you look closely it's still a beta program. For those not familiar with betas that means be sure to have a recent image of your system and/or data backups because the program may not be stable.

If anyone is familiar with Prevx I would say it's a similar concept to the Panda version. http://www.prevx.com/ The Prevx site used to explain how the product worked but now it appears you have to download a .pdf.

Same here with avast!. They would have to pull it out of my clenched fist.

I tried it on a test machine and it crashed with an unknown error during the scan. so, i probably won't try it again at least for a while.

I assume your talking about the free versions? If so, Avira has the best detections but the updates can be slow. Avast is the most complete free anti-virus with multiple shields including a web shield, decent detection rates and is very stable. I like both of these programs.

I'm not too sure about AVG but it's never made a good impression on me from reading the forums. I always install Avast on my sister's computers and my mothers. I've moved on to the paid version of Avira but I don't rely on it and have other protection programs and most importantly strategies.

The free versions of Avast and AVG used to be very comparative, then AVG went the bloatware route, making Avast, IMHO, clearly better than AVG. As it is, I use Avira on my computer, but because Avast has the email prescanning the freeware version of Avira lacks, I put Avast on my wife's computer because she gets lots of video's via email from friends.

I agree that Avira has the slightly higher detection rate, but as I recall, the last set of A/V comparatives shows the gap is narrowing.

I would never try a pig in the poke AV, I want to see the AV comparatives first.
