The idea of big powers having these old style big wars seems unlikely nowadays, especially with the economies intertwined.

Wars are not precluded after we go Mad Max on each other, post collapse. Just to be sure you should redouble your efforts to inflate our one last bubble.

If the sanctions are so effective, why weren't they implemented earlier??

Intention is to get the attention of the leadership; not shaft the civilian population.

Gradual escalation of turning the screws.

Problem has always been that the leadership does not usually give a damn about the civilians - they are already taken care of first.

But those that are applying the sanctions think that the leadership will care. so the first turns are very lightly applied and not really felt.

Similar to shutting off the Godiva chocolates for Hersey's when adjusting ones diet. Sounds like a sacrifice; but in reality, has no impact.

Meh, I think the right thing to do was to apply the sanctions while the Iranian students were protesting last year. That combination could probably have brought down their regime...
