Post office wants to close smaller brances.

Why dont they just hire part-time replacements making minimum wage like everyone else.

While they are at it, charge higher rates for bulk mail. Make the advertisers pay the same price as everyone else.
Unions.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- The money-losing U.S. Postal Service is planning to shut down thousands of stations and branches to try and ward off its fiscal woes.

The Postal Service has set a goal of closing 2,000 stations and branches in 2011, said Postal Service spokeswoman Joanne Veto. That's in addition to the 491 closures that are already underway, she said.

The Postal Service is not planning to close any post offices, she said, noting that the law prevents the closure of post offices for solely economic reasons. She described stations and branches as being smaller than post offices, with no mail processing, and sometimes no mail carriers.

Mail volume, the main source of income for the Postal Service, has plunged in tandem with the recession. Not only is it competing with the Internet as a means of communication, but businesses have been spending less money to send out advertisements, a form of mail that is not-so-affectionately known as junk mail.

The Postal Service suffered a net loss of $8.5 billion in fiscal year 2010, which ended Sept. 30. That's compared to a loss of $3.8 billion the prior year. The Postal Service delivered about 171 billion pieces of mail in fiscal year 2010, compared to 177 billion the prior year, costing about $1 billion in lost revenue.

"We have post offices that have fewer than five transactions a day," said Veto.

U.S. Postal Service spokeswoman Sue Brennan said that deliveries by the Postal Service have declined by 43 billion pieces in the last five years.

"We have nearly 32,000 post offices and only 19% cover their costs" said Brennan.

The Postal Service said locations will be closed based on a variety of factors, including finances, proximity to post offices, and availability of post office boxes and stores that sell stamps.

The Postal Service didn't identify specific stations and branches slated for closure. The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday the post office's plans to close 2,000 facilities.

Other attempts by the Postal Service to alleviate financial pressure, like adding a rate hike or scaling back to five-day mail, have been shot down by regulators or lawmakers.

Even though it's a federal agency, the Postal Service has not received any taxpayer funding since the early 1980s, when it was phased into an independent, self-sufficient financial entity.

You want to actually get your mail or some guys on the other street

I get my neighbors mail all the time. We live in a townhome and about 12 mailboxes are in 1 big box. I swear our mailman had a lobotomy and just randomly throws mail into the boxes. I've already gotten my neighbors W2 for his taxes. I'm scared to know what mail of mine has been give to neighbors.

Same here. Last week one day I got what appeared to be virtually all of my neighbors mail along with a few pieces of ours. Something similar happens about once every few months.

We're spread out on acreage. I can understand getting the neighbors mail, but when I get mail for someone on a completely different road, well that's concerning. I get peoples paychecks too. That's neat.

It does make you wonder. I put the neighbors back out in the box with the flag up but you wonder if other folks return the favor.

Same deal here. The combinations of 1,2,3 and A,B,C,D seems to present an impossible puzzle to solve for our mailman.

Lift the ban on other parcel services such as UPS, Fedex and DHL from delivering first class mail and close USPS.

odds of UPS/FedEx/DHL delivering a first class piece of mail for 44c = zero

Uh-huh, Less jobs is what this country needs right now.

Unsustainable jobs just like this needs to go. If they still want to keep these jobs then they need to apply to USPS and FEDEX for temporary jobs. This is the very reason the 09 Stimulus never worked because most of the jobs created were not sustainable!!

How to make the post office useful/profitable again in a few easy steps.

1. stop delivering mail to every house 6 days a week. Keep 6 day delivery, but only deliver at houses that are receiving first class that mail day. Junk mail will only be delivered with first class mail. the post office is largely a junk mail delivery system.

2. IF you currently mail delivered to your doorstep, there will no be a fee for that. Free delivery will still be available at the community mail box. Rural mail will not be delivered more than 3 times a week.

3. The people behind the counter need act like they care and have a clue. Keeping tape, bubble wrap and other shipping items for sale is really good idea. People will pay for these itens.

Yes it is illegal for them to do so.

Deliberately obtuse, as usual. There's no way they'd deliver a piece of first class mail for $0.44 if it were legal for them to do so, and anybody with half a brain knows it.

I dont see they would not if they were given the chance.

Probably because it would not be profitable to do so at that price. Only a government entity would be comfortable loosing money on every transaction because there is always more taxpayer money out there to grab. Tis the liberal way.

Why do conservatives hate one of the only federal (or "pseudo-federal" I guess) agencies actually mandated by the constitution of the United States?

Would they be happier if grandma in Nome had to pay $9 to send a Christmas card to her grandkids in Houston and $12 to her other grandkids in Miami? Imagine the great things that such a consistent and highly efficient system would do for our economy.

We pay the difference in our taxes anyway so whats the difference how we pay it?

And the constitution gives congress the power to establish a post office. It doesn't require one.

It'd be funny if they actually did this, because the people who live in the backwoods places in this country would be uber pissed at not receiving mail anymore.

Not only that, but they wouldn't be receiving packages that they'd normally get from UPS/Fedex because those carriers often pass their packages off to the USPS on the last leg of the delivery when it's unprofitable for them to deliver those packages to those backwoods locations.

Libertarians and their awful awful ideas.

They would still get mail, but they would have to pay the true cost of getting it to their address.

They would receive packages as well, they would just have to pay the full cost for that service. It's one of the many costs of living in Bumfuck.

Libertarians and their awful awful ideas.

Socialists with their inconsistent ideas based on centuries old models of factory labor.

RIP 2000 branches but it's time for the internet to take over mailing.

I really really wish the Internet could end all first class mail. But unfortunately, there are still a lot of financial institutions that mail stuff out. My health insurance provider sends me useless claim notifications that I can access online. Similarly, I still get letters from my bank, my disability insurance provider etc. All a huge waste of paper. I'm guessing it is because of 90 year old grandmas who still don't have an email address.
