Closing on a home. Get an attorney?

My parents are pushing me to get an attorney to represent me at the closing. My realtor says that it is not common in Georgia for people to hire their own attorney. I assume it will be a sizeable sum to have him out there for the hour of closing. There will be an attorney there that I am paying on behalf of the lender but they apparently only represent the lender. Does anyone have a reason why I should get my own attorney?

We had one, but he was free since he is a family member. It's just a precaution against the terribly techinical wording.

if your realtor is incompetent you'd probably want an attorney.

good real estate attorney probably bills $350+ an hour, plus drive time.

My realtor looked over my closing documents like a hawk. She found a few errors, but most were in my favor.

Yeah....it's a good idea to have one. We had one for the last 3 houses we've had.

I have purchased 3 homes without an attorney.

I now realize that I should have had one.

Do it.

Always a good idea to have someone professional to watch your back. $350 for 1 hour might save you $3,500 if the contract is deliberately or accidentally setup to screw you over. Do it.

Meh, I had two closings in GA and now one in MI w/out an attorney and didn't run into any issues.
