closest to death for me was when I went backpacking through Europe. Me and some buddies rented some moped's in Corfu, Greece. I took a corner to fast and ended up on the shoulder with a big tree fast approaching. I swerved hard to miss it and flew over the handle bars. My moped ended up under a big truck that was coming the under way and he just missed me. Somehow, I escaped with only scratches on my back.

I had rupture appendix as a child. The Doc said if we waited 10 mins later to get to the hospital that i would be dead. So the closest i came to death is 10 mins i guess.

Fell off a condo roof 25ft on to a driveway, lucky for me I landed in a 4ft pile of snow and did not get a scratch.

Rolled a Z-28 on a CA freeway doing 80mhp with the Tee-Tops off and landed up side down holding onto the seatbelt to keep from having my face grinded off my the asphalt.

Rearended a car on my motocycle and got lunched through the back widow of the car.

I could go on and on with stories like this.:D

After 15 shots of Jaegermeister in under an hour, the train tracks were comfortable. A good samaritan hauled me off 'em.

When I was in Panama (country), I got so excited to see a corel snake in the wild that I almost picked the snake. My wife stopped me when I was about 3 feet away from the snake, because the natives were staying away from the snakes. We were at a very remote area.. If I was bitten by a snake, I would good as dead.

But I did save this animal from it's doom (Highway).

40 mph head on with a SUV with my little 91 Toyota camrey. After 8 months I still have a mild hernia in my upper abdominal and lower chest. Other then the hernia and a black mark on my chest from the seat belt, I walked away from the accident. My car looked like my tomb however.

Broke my neck in a swimming pool, paralyzed, almost drowned, could barely breath, on a ventilator for a bit. About a year later I wound up getting a blood infection, all my organs began shutting down. Spent 6 months in the hospital, dont remember the first couple weeks.

I drove our lawmower over a cliff with about a 20 foot steep slope. I was slidding down the slope headed towards and uprooted tree trunk. The lawnmower stopped 12 inches away from long spear like branch from the tree that was perfectly in line to go through my skull if i didnt stop.

Congestive heart failure (at age 29).

I have Marfan Syndrome, a condition that involves loose connective tissue throughout the body. It mostly affects joints and the heart valves (cartilage).

Anyway, long story short...I was turned away at the ER not once, but twice over a period of two-three weeks. On my third trip to the ER they finally *listened* to me and my family when we told them it was most likely my heart. That and I was gasping for breath and turning blue.

All of this happened on New Years' Eve, 1999. For months I made the joke that I wasn't Y2k compliant :p.

Closest I can think of is when I was a toddler, I was throwing up everything, even drinks of water. I was taken to the pediatrician; she said that if I wasn't hospitalized that day, I probably wouldn't live through the night. I was there pretty darn quick then, and on an IV.
Not really THAT close I guess; I've had some close calls while driving - idiots turning without looking, running stop signs; you know, the kind of driver that makes you wish you had a multidirectional phaser turret mounted on your car.

When I was in the service in the 70's I drove from Tenn. to Mo. with a guy who had just bought himself a Chevelle. Being his first new car (to him anyway) he didn't want me to drive, and this guy was a terrible driver! He would take corners WAY to fast and not bank to the inside, he got us lost and we were on the side of some mountain road, he would alternate between going up one side of the bank and then heading for this LONG drop off the mountain. We had several near head-on collisions. He almost hit a bridge going 80 or so....It was SO bad that eventually I just lay down in the back seat and waited for death to come take me. (All this was happening at night, and the guy was falling asleep at the wheel) All in all we must have had at least 30-40 close calls!

Eventually he DID let me drive! No sooner did that happen that a raccoon decided he was tired of living and dove under the car, the guy (now sleeping in the back seat) wakes up and "What was THAT?!!"

ME: "Nothing, GO back to SLEEP!"

When we got to Missouri and it was time to go back to base, I took the plane back. It's a very weird feeling to resign yourself to your own death! I don't think I have EVER felt safe riding with someone else since then!

I was in a room with people who were playing country music one time. Luckily I escaped with minimal brain damage, and after 20 months no longer have any desire to have children with my dad.
