My first deal pretty hot for licensed ham / amateur radio operators

Radio Shack 10 Meter mobile transceiver model HTX-10

sku 19-1110

25 watts on FM / SSB
7 watts on AM

All manuals and online information found here

Seems like a solid radio with lots of info online.

You NEED a minimum Novice or Tech Plus FCC amateur radio license to operate!

I got the last one in the Queens area.

When I saw this thread's title, I thought to myself, "10 Meters! Only 33-foot transmission capability wouldn't even cover my home!" But I guess it means something more... ;)

Will have to look into this to add to my 40-year old Knight Kit unit I got as a kid from a friend who built it while he was in Da Nang.

God, I miss Knight Electronics out of Chicago...

I've been looking in SoCal and so far Radio Shack has shrugs. All the Ham stuff is pretty much gone from the online (only) catalog, the only thing listed under transcievers was a external speaker.

I checked here in the Springfield, Il area and they too show no stock - anywhere in the entire region, whatever that means. Sounded like a good deal too. Thanks.

Unlike Staples who can looked up all stores (nearest to furthest). Radio Shack stores can only search inventory within their sales region. In NYC, Manhattan stores aren't able to look up Queens stores (visa versa).

Depending on how badly you want it.. call outside the region. If they don't have it (which they might not) ask to check the region. Tell them you'll even take a store display. Lots of times they'll show stock of one but the person looking it up automatically assumes that's the display model and discounts that (don't ask me why).

Mine was a store display.. in perfect condition minus manuals (available online).

You might as well ask for the Pro-92 scanner $50 while you're at it. Scored one of those too. :)

Nuts, started calling local stores and got somebody ambitious who searched in other regions and found a couple, but like 40 miles away in the middle of no place. If I decide not to drive over for them I will post the store locations.

Called the district store. They were able to check stock not only regionally (2 in the area - 1 store couldn't find it, II bought the other) but also nationally. There are a few of them out there. Not a lot though. It may have helped that I used to work for the now district manager many years ago - back in the days of hand writing tickets.

Managed to snag 2 demo models after scouring high and low... Even missing parts, the managers wouldn't give an inch any further... Who needs a mic anyway... Seem to be nice units, though

(Tip 1) - The best way to find them seems to be to call outside your state or region, and find somebody at the regional warehouse to talk to... Even if they don't have them they often know who has the greatest chance of having one.

(Tip 2) - I found that the mom & pop RS stores in small towns (non-company owned stores) were very helpful in helping me find a regional warehouse, because that's their only direct link for finding items fast that they need.

BTW, mom & pop store folks tried to be the most helpful, even though they weren't working for a sale... Not to mention, less acne and more likely to be able to actually identify electronic items...

Thanks Again, Slappy - I can finally use my ham license again!
