I agree, 2gb isn't needed yet.

EDIT: I also use a 9800 Pro, and have decided to NOT upgrade unless I find a killer deal on something better. The 9800 Pro still plays all the latest games just fine. Unless if you really really want those extra AA and AF settings...
 
Only way I see 2 GB to be a benefit is for a server. If you install 1 GB look at how much ram is being used.

This boils down to the benefit received being worth what you spend.
 
I agree with the others. For gaming, you won't see any real difference with 2Gb. Extra RAM will help if you're planning on doing hardcore 3D animation or video editing. If you're just gaming, spend the money on a video card upgrade, which is where the vast majority of your gaming performance comes from.
 
Increasing RAM capacity cannot result in a performance gain, only prevent a loss from paging and even then it is in playability rather than framerates (i.e. preventing occasional stutter and increased load times). Commit Charge Peak versus Physical Memory Total under Task Manager Performance shows how much is required to prevent paging.

Agreed. Everything else you have is fine. However, since the video card makes the biggest difference in gaming, and you'll get up to a 50 fps increase with the XT while playing Halflife 2.

A 9800pro lags 😕 Im using a Geforce 4 Ti 4200 and Im not lagging. of course i dont have everything turned on 🙁
 
I don't think another gig is needed, however, if you plan on switching to windows 64, then I suggest getting the extra gig. A video card would be a better investment for now. I have a 9700 pro and I am already thinking about getting a better one. I get a score of 2000 on 3dmark05 which is not where I would like to be. I have 2 gigs or ram on my computer and with windows XP it doesn't use much of it. but when I was running win 64, I was using 400+ MB and I wasn't running any programs other than windows. The only reason I switched back to win XP pro is because I wanted to put my hard drives in RAID and they don't make any 64 bit raid drivers for my setup yet. I hope they make them!
 
what is with the people who have newer cards complaining about lag, Gf4 Ti4200 64MB

Don't get another gig of ram unless your going to play EQ2
 
1 GB is plenty. Dont waist your money, you want to play HL2 at top speed then get a Radeon X800 XT, for doom 3 gey a 6800 Ultra *Coughs SLI*

I play with a 9800pro@XT+ 1360x1280 no FSAA 8xAF, and only get the autosave stutters.

man.. wonder how a SLI config would run HL2...

Since you can play HL-2 1600x1200 4xAA 8xAF with a X800XT you would need a monitor with very high res to get better graphics.

But still SLI........ drooooooool 😉
 
THE truth is from a performance standpoint 1 gig is faster than 2 gigs from a performance stand point . Hell many cards have trouble running 2 gigs IF you go for X800xt get the X800Xt PE
 
1Gig isn't faster than 2gig. ANYTIME you give a computer more RAM or a higher frequency than what you were at previously you are going t get a performance gain , No matter how minor it may be, not sure how things have trouble running 2gig when they support 3 and 4gig.

If you have a CompUSA store near you just lose a couple hours of sleep get there around 4AM on black friday and get a shiny new 6800NU for $200. If not i would definately get a 6800GT over and X800Pro. It wins in most of the benches. If you want faster, get either the 6800U or the X800XT, it is all personal preference as the performance differences are so negligable.

I'd like to see someone test 1gb vs 2gb. I have a feeling that it might offer some performance gains with some games already. Though the gains might not require 2gb, but somewhere between 1 and 2.
