Cliffs:
-We live in a nice neighborhood going downhill because of low income hoodlums moving in
-Somebody tries to break in through our back door while I'm still awake and the family sleeps
-I use my shotgun to scare this guy off
-My wife is now going to get some firearms classes and I'm getting her a handgun for when I'm gone
Yeah, so we live in a neighborhood which is pretty much all duplexes. We live near the last batch of these duplexes where the single family houses start. The neighborhood has been going downhill as of late with a lot of lower income hoodlums moving in. I think we now have some Section 8 housing a few streets down, but anyways, I've never had an experience with break-ins or any kind of crime before, so this was a bit of a wake up for myself.
I was watching some late night Family Guy and all of our lights were out (apparently so were the lights outside... bulbs were dead and I didn't realize it). The car was in the garage, so obviously this place looks like no one is home with all the blinds shut. I get up to walk towards my bedroom to see if my wife is still awake, and sure enough she's sound asleep in bed. Our son is upstairs asleep as well. As I'm walking back to the couch, I hear our back storm door creaking and I think the wind is catching it, so I start to walk towards the back door so i can lock the storm door (all of our doors are locked except this storm door at the time). Next thing I know, I see a silhouette of some guy and the door budges forward as if someone is trying to see if it's unlocked.
As soon as this happens, I flip on the light run into the bedroom and grab my shotgun. This guy must have been drunk or something because the light didn't seem to phase him in his attempt to get in. I told my wife to get in the closet immediately and she finally realized what was going on on the second time I tell her this. I ran into the kitchen and the molding around the frame near the dead bolt is starting to crack, so I chambered the shotgun in a very noticeable fashion and told him I was going to shoot if he didn't run like hell. I see his silhouette take off and I call the cops right away.
They had some dogs sniff some guys trail out and had me go and ID him, but I honestly couldn't give a positive ID since all I saw was his silhouette. It just makes me angry that this crap goes on in our neighborhood and I'm looking forward to moving soon. Honestly, I feel a little paranoid anymore and I hate the feeling that it now takes firearms to protect my family. I'm taking my wife to firearms classes and getting her a handgun.
