Cliffs:
-We live in a nice neighborhood going downhill because of low income hoodlums moving in
-Somebody tries to break in through our back door while I'm still awake and the family sleeps
-I use my shotgun to scare this guy off
-My wife is now going to get some firearms classes and I'm getting her a handgun for when I'm gone

Yeah, so we live in a neighborhood which is pretty much all duplexes. We live near the last batch of these duplexes where the single family houses start. The neighborhood has been going downhill as of late with a lot of lower income hoodlums moving in. I think we now have some Section 8 housing a few streets down, but anyways, I've never had an experience with break-ins or any kind of crime before, so this was a bit of a wake up for myself.

I was watching some late night Family Guy and all of our lights were out (apparently so were the lights outside... bulbs were dead and I didn't realize it). The car was in the garage, so obviously this place looks like no one is home with all the blinds shut. I get up to walk towards my bedroom to see if my wife is still awake, and sure enough she's sound asleep in bed. Our son is upstairs asleep as well. As I'm walking back to the couch, I hear our back storm door creaking and I think the wind is catching it, so I start to walk towards the back door so i can lock the storm door (all of our doors are locked except this storm door at the time). Next thing I know, I see a silhouette of some guy and the door budges forward as if someone is trying to see if it's unlocked.

As soon as this happens, I flip on the light run into the bedroom and grab my shotgun. This guy must have been drunk or something because the light didn't seem to phase him in his attempt to get in. I told my wife to get in the closet immediately and she finally realized what was going on on the second time I tell her this. I ran into the kitchen and the molding around the frame near the dead bolt is starting to crack, so I chambered the shotgun in a very noticeable fashion and told him I was going to shoot if he didn't run like hell. I see his silhouette take off and I call the cops right away.

They had some dogs sniff some guys trail out and had me go and ID him, but I honestly couldn't give a positive ID since all I saw was his silhouette. It just makes me angry that this crap goes on in our neighborhood and I'm looking forward to moving soon. Honestly, I feel a little paranoid anymore and I hate the feeling that it now takes firearms to protect my family. I'm taking my wife to firearms classes and getting her a handgun.

Damn...that sucks, but could've been a lot worse. So do we thank Family Guy for you saving your family and house from a break-in? :p

Good job...and good luck moving out :)

My wife HATES Family Guy... thinks it's inappropriate, but I think it's equal-opportunity hilarity. I told her what I was watching when this all happened and she sighed and says nothing when I watch it now. :D

I'm sure others on here will disagree but if someone is breaking into my house, they deserve to die.

They are invading my home and potentially putting my life and my families life at risk.

There is no "oh maybe he just needed to steal something for money so he could provide for his family" bullshit. If I need more money I work more.

Just my $00.02.

Believe me, if he'd stood there for 1 more second I would have shot him. Castle law FTW!

Figured this thread could use some pics. Here is the deterrent I used. http://tinyurl.com/d5wyqb

Nice! I am not too familiar with firearms myself, except the M-16A2 which I know like the back of my hand (enlisted), but I've recently gotten into educating myself a great deal. The shotgun I have is a model '48 Remington that was given to me by my late grandfather. RIP.

I live in Texas and if someone is actually stupid enough to try and trespass on your property / break in to your house, they take their lives into their own hands every time.

Hard to say what I would have done in the situation, other than tell my wife to call the police while I hand her one gun and take another to meet the dumbass trying to get in the back door.

One shot of 12 guage 00 buck through the door would be ideal, but I hate hassle and if I did that I'd have to fill out shitloads of paperwork for the dead guy plus replace my door and deal with his fucking family after that so I think killing someone would be my last resort. IE if someone actually kicks the door in.

We all say that until we're faced with what the OP went through. Glad to hear that your family is safe. Hopefully you won't have to use weapons again, but be glad that you have em!

Good job.

Good call on not shooting through the door, too.

We'll have to save this thread to show the people who say crime doesn't happen and guns should be banned. ;)

No need, they are already watching and thinking of something clever to say.

I searched through your text to see about flood lights... sure enough... none (non-working) to deter thieves.

Glad it all worked out ok and you and yours are safe. One more argument for an armed citizenry. After reading stories like this I am that much more tempted to carry one of my guns around the house with me.

Do this next time and save society some headaches.

Not worth the lawsuit/etc..and if it was a drunk dude at the wrong house (unlikely, I know), it would be a very bad day.

I agree 100%.

The Castle Law has come into play in the news here. You need to understand the law before you use it. My understanding is that a felony has to be in the act on your property in order to use the castle law. So at your door would that constitute tresspassing or breaking and entering.

I don't know, the gun did exactly what it was supposed to do: scare off the intruder such that he leaves and you don't have to fire the gun.

I think everyone would hope for a situation like this, where just showing the gun resolves the situation.

Yes. What if he just had the wrong house? I think evidence of that is when the light came on and he was not fazed. He believed someone he lived with had gotten up upon hearing him.

A real burglar, upon a light coming on, would have not stuck around to hear you say "Get lost or I'll shoot".

Thus, you might have killed an innocent man.
