new hd is 160 gb maxtor...I tried to clone with ghost and then using maxblast software..but each time the drive will not boot into windows...I get BSOD or reboot

I partition the drive into 5 partitions this was with maxblast all I got was blue screen of death...with Norton ghost I tried one large parttion...help please

I would recommend first disabling goback if it is currently enabled. DId you try fdisk to create new partitions on new hdd?I have used partition magic software many times to sucessfully create, merge and resize partitions. Also remember to burn your critical files that cannot be replaced prior to this process. THis site provides some excellent ghost, fdisk and partitioning guides.
What version of ghost, and what OS{fat32 or ntfs file system} are you using re:ghost process? Were you able to boot your OS using ghost to start the partition cloning, and more importantly, were you able to see any or all of your source and destination partitions while in dos using ghost?

"To clone an entire (physical) DISK, select: Local -> Disk -> To Disk
To clone an individual PARTITION, select Local -> Partition -> To Partition
Say, for example, you have an older/smaller drive that contains 3 partitions. If you clone one partition at a time, you'll first have to create the partitions on the new drive (destination/target). You'll have to repeat the cloning process for each partition. Doing each partition individually gives you more control over the cloning process. If you clone an entire physical hard disk, I don't think you have to partition it first
Notice that you cannot clone Partition -> To Disk, nor can you clone Disk -> To Partition. I don't have all the other steps listed here because I've never done this, and I don't want to give you the illusion that I have. But you will go through the steps or selecting the source and destination/target, just like you do with creating and restoring images." QUOTE

thanks...

I am using winxp pro..so it is NTFS

In order to use ghost Go back has to be disabled

Ghost was able to reboot and enter dos and even did the clone to the disc but when I placed the disc after cloning the whole disc it would start the boot process and fail

Use the standard Ghost boot disc option in Ghost to make a boot disc and use that to Clone your HDD. I just used it about twenty minutes ago to clone my 20gig Maxtor to my new 160gig Maxtor ;) and I am using it as I type!

Neal, so you basically completed a clone to new hdd that had 1 partiton, then you set jumper cables to master and tried to boot it up right? What was the error message you received?
Also, it is important to check entegrity of the cloned partition or image while still in ghost. I haven't used it in awhile, but I believe there is an option to do this while using ghostdisk. Also are you using maximum compression during the process?

with the ghost clone I think it just rebooted after starting load winxp with no error message...I can not recall now whether it was the ghost clone or the maxblast "clone" did this ..one did have a kernel error message but it would reboot so fast could never read it...
I even tried a safe mode boot to no avail

Yes I set it in my system as a master and as the only hdd...tried it on IDE 3 and SATA controller and it was a no go...(on Abit IT7 max 2 rev2)

I used no compression to my knowledge....

I think I will try a ghost boot disk and retry....

Challenger..thanks I got the disk cloned however it will only boot off an IDE cable not off my SATA...funny thing is my original hdd from which I cloned will boot off the ide or sata channel

anybody have any ideas

My setup is a IT7Max 2 rev2

original boot was Maxtor 80 gb on sata from HPT controller on the mobo
maxtor 160 gb on second sata channel for data, downloads...

now 160 gb hdd on ide 3( off HPT controller) if I place this on a sata channel for boot it just restarts
160 gb on sata as data, etc
