Cloning a disk and making a self booting restore disc

Is there any package available that's not overly complex.
That I could use to clone a disc and make a self booting restore disc?

If you don't mind paying for it, Acronis True Image Home 11 does a great job of being user-friendly. I went into restoring hard drives without knowing anything about ghosting or whatnot a few days ago; Acronis is just install, click restore, click what you need to restore, save backup. Then, you can make a bootable restore disc by choosing the option that lets you do so (Bootable Rescue Media Builder).

Hello!
Acronis True Image always helps me to clone disc and make restore disc with no problem.
I've been using it for a long time and i can say that it is a very reliable and easy to use software and it has a user friendly interface. As for me...i prefer to pay money for this software and be sure that my data will be safe.

Clonezilla is free. It is not as easy as TI to use.

I tried Clonezilla, but I couldn't get it to divide the image so I could put it on discs.

Why is that?

Scroll down 3 images to see the one with the following note above it.
By default, Clonezilla will split the image of partition to 2000MB each volume, we accept that.

Did you get to this screen? What size did you choose?
What exactly happened?

I chose to split by 700MB but when it finished writing the file it was around 2GB.

i use SystemRecueCD , which is a free Linux LiveCD. has worked fine. it has an option to split the files into small chunks, but i have only chosen the default option of 2Gb files. i have never used Clonezilla, so i cant say which is easier.

I haven't used TI... but, if the Disc image is like 15 GB, then is it possible for TI to use multiple dvds? But still be able to restore as a self booting disc?

True Image is good for niblets with its purty interface but not very powerful compared to ye olde Binary Research developed Ghost. On account of that can be used to create and restore images and clones from a command line batch file on removeable media. Ergo, as foolproof as possible (power off, insert appropriate medias, and power on).

I gave it a try.
The image is not a single file. It is a folder. The image file is actually inside that folder with other files that are about MBR and partition locations I assume.

The size of the folder in this case is 4.86G. I left the size for splitting at default 2000MB.
The image is split inside the folder. It has three parts with aa, ab and ac suffixes in the names. Two of them are 2GB. The last one is slightly larger than 1GB.

Clonezilla and True Image both can.
The original post asked specifically for that ("self booting restore disk").

Well I have True Image 10, and that option isn't available, so I have to pop in the True Image boot cd then my dvd with the .tib file. Maybe Ill upgrade to v11.

Hold on a minute!
I am not saying that v11 has anything else more than what you just said.

Can you not create a rescue DVD and boot to it and create an image and store the image on the same boot DVD as well?
I have not done that myself.

Under True Image "Options/Tools/Media Components"" you can specify to add "True Image Full Version" or "one-click image restore" to your backup. I haven't tried this option personally.

guys I have used ghost and acronis in the past. Is Clonezilla as good at making images and can it make a boot disk for restores? I am sorry I looked at the web page and I don't understand everything is cloning the drive to multable systems.
I just want to image my os for emergency backup so I can restore it to this or another drive in case of failure.

I have always made my C partition only about 20G and only put the os on it. This way my image of the os is usually less than 2-3 G.

Clonezilla is free. But, it is not user friendly at all.
True Image is very user friendly. But, it is not free.

They both can:
make images;
make boot media;
image Vista (later revisions);
compress the image;
restore the image to a different partition/drive.
