I have heard from someone that when you build a PC yourself from parts which you have bought as in separate form, and then build it up yourself the PC is called a "Clone PC" Is this true?

I just want to know.

Thanks,

I think the term "clone pc" originated from parts that were not IBM.

I agree with Guilty. Based on the original definition of a clone PC you can very well say that Dells, Compaq's and several other known vendors make Clone PC's.

Well here's the thing, terms are very subjective and arbitrary.

All clone PC's use branded components (Intel/AMD chips, IBM/Maxtor/Quantum/Seagate/etc drives, etc..), the same branded components that IBM uses. In the past people called non-ibm pc's "clones" since it follows the architecture (ps/2 originally) IBM had. The term clone also came about since no one could "clone" a macintosh. So to clone was basically to create an IBM looking/working/functioning PC.

Nowadays i hardly hear or see anyone using the word "Clone" anymore... think of it as an outdated term used to call unheard of PC's (which, though a paradox, doesn't exist since all PC's are made up of branded components and thus - they *are* known)

Am i confusing you yet? lol! sorry about that :)

It's right to call it anything you like... hehe.. tho if you want to make it more fun you could call it the S2K PC or sumthin ;-) - how's that for a brand eh?

Thanks Rootaxes I will! Its becasue this "Person" keeps calling my PC a Clone PC and saying it is crapper than brand names and is sooooo unreliable as he put it and that just cheeses me off! So if I give it a name then it will sound much better, is that right?

And Thanks again,

SKY.

"Clone" does not necessarily mean inferior. It was simply used to describe hardware using IBM's PC platform that was not made by IBM, at the time. If you look around today, IBM isnt even a leading PC manufacturer anymore. They hold on to it, but their more lucrative areas are storage and enterprise. So the term still technically applies, it's just not as significant. Today the term clone _could_ mean "generic" more than the old meaning.
