clone large drive to small drive?

Trying to "clone" from one 40g laptop drive to another 30g usb external drive, But Ghost 9.0 won't do it - tried drive copy and making-image-then-restore, but no worky. Any1 knows any software could work for this? It is over usb. TIA.

Acronis True Image might be able to do that, but I'm not sure. Are you trying to clone the primary partition of the 40gb drive to the USB drive (ie, boot off the external drive)?

yes, I am "downgrading" 🙂, trying use the 30gb to replace the 40gb, thank for the info.

I have an older version of Ghost (2002 Enterprise Edition), and it works fine for cloning from a larger to smaller drive. I have cloned a basic Windows installation from both 20 and 40gb drives to old 8.4 drives as a backup. I would think that your newer version would work too.
