Hi,

I am looking for a possibility of copying all the files off the boot drive to a network share. Putting it into on image that I can mount on a different machine is okay.

Has to be free.

Thanks.

(Tried dragging and dropping put i am getting too many errors)

Would Time Machine work for you?

No.

I got my wife a new MBA. The old one will go on ebay. I have copied all data over, it is being backed up via time machine, but I want to make sure i have every piece of info tucked away somewhere - hence a clone.

Try SuperDuper (free for the basic features)

or Carbon Copy Cloner (all features free for 30 days).

Either should do what you need. Either will also make a bootable backup if you want. The extended features include the ability to do incremental backups. Either is much faster and way more comprehensive than TimeMachine alone. For me, CCC is standard equipment on my OSX machines.

I let CCC run overnight. This am it had 'quit unexpectedly'. But there is a 100GB image mounted with her files. Is this an indication that the image did create properly?

Probably. Do a check, or use rsync between the image and the HDD.

Or just trust the error and do the CCC clone again. But do it to a local drive - network errors can cause... you know.
