Clock Setting for Voodoo3 3000?

I just downloaded V.Control. I have not tried overclocking my Voodoo3 3000 AGP card before. The program states that the default speed is 166 Mhz. What's a safe but decent overclock setting? I have good case cooling, but no separate video card cooling.

The Voodoo3 tends to run hot, an extra fan will help it out. I've had cards which will make 200, but that was with additional cooling. 183 should be fairly easy, but as always, YMMV.

Yeah, I'd say 185 should be doable. Since they do put off a decent bit of heat, make sure you have adaquate case ventilation. We put a average old CPU fan on my brother's, (after drilling the heatsink so the screws would fit), and it ran quite well at 185. No overheating at all at that speed. (Woulda gone for MUCH higher but I stuck it in a computer to sell.)

I'd be very careful about doing anything above 180 MHz. Voodoo3 3000s were absolute roasters.

Thanks all. I did set it at 180, but now I'm having trouble getting V.Control to operate properly. Could it be an issue with XP? Are there better choices out there?

Any suggestions for cooling solutions?

My Voodoo 3 had 5.5ns ram. Some came through that way, 6ns was the norm. I ran it @ 183 MHz. The HS that is on it is the same as the one the 3500 used, which was factory clocked @ 183. Yes, the V3 cards run VERY HOT. I used a slot cooler with mine. What is nice about one of these is it cools the card AND takes all that heat out of your case instead of just blowing it into the case. Keeps the whole system cooler.

Thanks, oldfart. Is V.Control the best utility to use with Win XP?

i had a magic voodoo3 2000 that hit 210 with a heatsink fan and pennies epoxied to the ram (yeah, i know, but it was cheap and it worked) maybe you will get lucky, but i think that 183 would be a good oc for an average voodoo3 that doesn't have added cooling.

With the FSB at 100 and the AGP bus at 66 (2/3 the FSB), since V.Control reported that the Voodoo3 was running at 166, should I conclude that the Voodoo3 runs at 2.5X the AGP?
