This is an excerpt from Firing Squad's recent look at Undying. His PIII933/GF2GTS config w/ 1024x768x32 bit color lags? What could cause that?

<< The first thing we noticed about Clive Barker's Undying is its graphical polish. Based on the Unreal engine, Undying reminded us of 1999's Wheel of Time with its use of large textures, and fantastic architecture. Thankfully, Undying's developers appear to have successfully fought the temptation to use the Unreal engine's signature shiny floors and candy-colored lighting. Instead, they focused on expansive architecture and great use of dynamic lighting and shadows. The paintings in the mansion are testament to the game's texturing - they look like they were created by an oil color expert in their style and exquisite detail. >>

<< The overall result is a game that is an early candidate for best graphics of 2001. The only downside to this is that Undying seems to be a system killer. My P3 933 with GeForce 2 GTS gets absolutely bogged down at times, running at 1024x768x32 bit color. Knocking down the resolution to 800x600 made it more tolerable, but it could be another case of an Unreal engine game hating Direct3D. We'll try 16 bit color before the full review comes out and see if that speeds things up. >>

What the heck?

I've a P3 700 @ 1004Mhz with a GF2 GTS, and Undying does lag sometimes at 10x7*32. I guess it is the Unreal engine not getting along well with D3D because the Unreal engine was written around the time that Voodoo cards were reigning supreme (with barely any competition BTW) and Glide was the API to use. So, Unreal being based on Glide, causes the D3D performance to lag pretty badly at certain points. Surprisingly, the game still remains freaky to me despite performance issues :)

Yeah, I played through it at 8X6 on my geforce 2, it just doesn't like it. On the otherhand, it was fast as all hell in 16 bit color--but it looked REAL BAD.

Firingsquad reviews have gone down the tubes lately. Complete garbage. "We like this game! It's neat. Here's 10 seperate pages on each of the guns. And here's TWO pages worth of conclusions that say the same thing! This game is neat." That's what happens when a company is run by nepotism and inbreeding, to judge by the looks of those guys. Ok, that was a little harsh. ;)

I thought this game was freaking awesome. I just finished it last week. I had the puter to run fine at 10X7X32 though.

I love the fact the demo ran smooth on my girlfriend's old dual voodoo II setup. I forgot how well the unreal engine and voodoo's get along. Looked like fun, I might pick it up.

I played it with my P3 550 GF2MX 8x6x16. It was kinda choppy sometimes, but ok most of the time. Strange that Unreal played VERY smoothly on the same settings....
