Clinton would fix husband's NAFTA mistakes

PITTSBURGH - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton told manufacturers and union workers on Monday that her husband made mistakes related to the North American Free Trade Agreement that she plans to fix.

Her comment came in response to a question by a union worker at a summit sponsored by the Alliance for American Manufacturing.< The worker said President Clinton had tricked them when he championed NAFTA during his presidency.

"As smart as my husband is, he does make mistakes," Clinton said. The Democratic presidential candidate said she would fix problems that have led to job losses,< or would tell Canada and Mexico the United States is pulling out of the agreement.

Trade policy is a key issue in Pennsylvania's Democratic primary on April 22. Many workers blame U.S. trade policy for taking away U.S. jobs.

Earlier at the same summit, Sen. Barack Obama in a separate appearance questioned Clinton's sincerity in her opposition to trade agreements.

Clinton has been on the defensive over what she did or didn't do as first lady to promote NAFTA. Mark Penn, Clinton's chief strategist, recently was demoted after it was revealed he met with representatives of the Colombian government to help promote a free trade agreement Clinton opposes.

Touching on familiar themes, Clinton on Monday emphasized her work as a New York senator helping manufacturers in her state. She promised to step up enforcement of trade laws and stand up to China.

"We're going to start making things like steel and other important commodities in America again," Clinton said.

She also reminded those in attendance about a comment Obama, D-Ill., had made about some small-town Pennsylvanians being bitter over their economic circumstances and "cling to guns and religion" as a result. The issue had festered all weekend on the campaign trail.

Later Monday, Clinton was to appear at a Democratic party dinner in Philadelphia and a rally in Bristol.

This is exactly the thing that Obama is talking about causing the bitterness in America today when it comes to politicians especially those that look out for number one, but until today I have never seen one take it to this extreme.

This whole dust up is going to do a lot of damage to both of them, meanwhile McCain is laughing all the way to the Oval Office. Clinton's pandering on NAFTA and cross-eyed whiskey shot photo combined with Obama's small town flap have tangled their parachutes and they're now spinning together towards the ground.

Exactly. BTW, have you seen how many promises Clinton has made during this election? She has promised to have a poverty czar, water summit, Gun summit, Jobs summit, AIDS summit, etc... It's amazing how people can't take a step back and see all this. Obama speaks the truth and people jump on him.

Clinton supports free trade. The Clintons have ALWAYS upheld a globalist neoliberal agenda. And yes, this is a perfect example of what Obama was talking about. A bald-faced lying politician who will promise anything to get their votes, but then stab them right in the back once elected, and sell them off to special interests of cronyism and corruption. But even worse, insult to injury, expect them to forget that the next election cycle. And why not? They get away with it every time... oh wait, was that elitist?

More spot on than elitist.

A friend of mine once asked me if i thought that pretty much any politician would sacrifice three thousand civilian lives and three thousand more of ours (military) just to get elected and i sincerely doubt there is anyone running for office that wouldn't do it.

I have very little faith in politicians and very much faith in people, too much sometimes.

I doubt "change" will be more than more of the same though.

Obama would undermine free trade and this country's economy.
Clinton at least knows the difference between what a Democrat has to say to win the nomination and what is actually a workable trade policy. Obama does not.

Which explains why she is lying everywhere she goes about her position on trade policy, right?

Yeah, you have to pander to the unions to be nominated as a Democrat. Doesn't mean you should let unions determine this country's trade policy like Obama would.

It's kind of weird to watch someone straight up lie in front of the press. I guess she's already weighed the percentages of how many people will be won over by this versus how many she'll annoy with the constant doublespeak.

Neither Democrat candidate is dumb enough to risk pulling out and jeopardizing the U.S.'s access to Canada's oil (and other commodities) at the prices they get them for (guaranteed to be the same rate as sold locally), so it's pointless to agonize over.

Funny, isnt it, that the words coming out of her mouth are in direct opposition of her voting record?

Doesn't really matter, her campaign was finished on February 5. She's been sucking air for 10 weeks now, not bad!

Yep. I hope the poeple of PA see through this BS.

Forget about her claim to have dodged sniper?s bullets in Bosnia, or that she was named after Sir Edmund Hilary, or that she met a woman who was denied health care and died.

All of these Hillary Clinton fibs and exaggerations are basically harmless. But her current attempts to lie about her record and to pretend that she always opposed free trade agreements and disagreed with Bill on NAFTA is a serious distortion of her record as she searches for blue collar support in Pennsylvania.

Hillary was a strong supporter of NAFTA. Her official schedule reveals that she attended meetings designed to promote its passage and her memoir, Living History betrays no hint of any opposition to her husband?s key legislative accomplishment of his first two years in office ? the ratification of NAFTA.

Hillary and I spoke frequently through all of 1993 and 1994 and together we plotted to help NAFTA ratification. She was deeply involved in the decision to enlist past presidents in supporting the bill and followed the vote count with heightening anxiety as it appeared closer and closer.

That she could totally reinvent her record, turn it around 180 degrees, and expect us to fall for it, shows her arrogance and her continuing belief that she can sell us on anything, no matter how obviously false.

Trade was no side issue in the Clinton administration; it was central to his key worldview ? that he had to lead America to compete successfully in the new global economy. His refusal to submit to protectionism or to legislation to reduce layoffs ? his commitment to the free market ? was a singular badge of courage in his presidency. For Hillary to indicate now so fundamental a disagreement with a policy so integral to her husbands? presidency is transparently phony.

And when Hillary entered the Senate, before she started to run for president, she was a reliable vote for free trade, supporting a host of bi-lateral agreements negotiated by her husband and by the Bush Administration. She even took the lead in urging the admission of China to the World Trade Organization, the key counter-protectionist step of the past two decades.

Hillary spoke at a meeting to promote NAFTA in November of 1993. Participants told ABC News that Hilary was ?100 percent pro-NAFTA? and expressed ?not a hint of waffling? on the deal. In 1996, she said that NAFTA was giving Americans a chance to compete. ?That?s what a free and fair trade agreement like NAFTA is all about. I think NAFTA is proving its worth.?

And in 2002, the AP reports that she told the Democratic Leadership Council praising Bill?s economic policies: ?The economic recovery plan stands first and foremost as a testament to both good ideas and political courage. National service. The Brady Bill. Family leave. NAFTA. Investment in science and technology. All of these came our of some very fundamental ideas bout what would work. The results speak for themselves.?

Does she really believe that we are about to forget history and buy that Hillary was opposed to NAFTA all along?

NAFTA has worked very well. It has improved Mexico and the United States. Without it, we would be burdened by millions of more immigrants from Mexico. It was one of the stellar achievements of the Clinton administration. For Hillary to try to sell us on a revised history speaks to her confidence that she can make us believe anything.

Gee, I wonder why the Clinton admin WH records aren't going to be released?
