These guys finally seem to be getting the ball rolling. Project is currently in alpha (in-house) testing. They expect to go public early 2003.

The project site is located here.

Check out these system requirements: :Q

Typically, running a 10 year simulation of a version of the model with a full atmosphere but a simplified ocean (HadAM3, HadSM3) for Experiment 0 will require about 22 days CPU time on a PIII 800 MHz but only 10 days on a PIV 1.4 GHz. So it is only worthwhile participating if you generally leave your PC on for long periods - in particular over night. Note that the extra greenhouse gas emission generated by the use of your PC is very small. However, if you need to switch your computer off (for example when you go on holidays), you will not loose all the previous results. The simulation will restart from the last place it reached.

To be able to install and run such simulation on your PC, we recommend the following minimum system specifications:

Operating System: Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000 Professional, or Windows NT 4.0

Processor: Athlon, PII, PIII, PIV

Speed: Min 450MHz. Preferably 700+

Memory: Min 128 MB at this stage. (64MB may be enough but we haven't tested) for use

Of course this will use more electricity which leads to emissions of greenhouse gases. However, the electricity usage is small and we think this problem is sufficiently important to justify it. (Energy use of the experiment.)

Disk space:Need 600MB free to allocate to this experiment.

Internet: Any type of connection needed to (i) download the model and (ii) send us back result at the end of the run.

Ahhh... Now this one directly relates to a life-long (since I was little) hobby and almost major in college, of Meterology. :D I've been waiting for this one...

Thanks for the heads up! I hope they really really really consider a linux client though....

Excellent news, I've been waiting for this one all year, kinda. Sounds interesting.

This project is close to heart for Dr David Anderson of SETI, I have been waiting for this project too. The home base for the project is England as Dr Anderson has been there to assist in the development as well.

Edit: Of course you know all that already Mortal as you are most likely working with Dr Anderson there at Berkely, say Hi for me :)

I'll believe it when I see it. They've been working on this for at least four years. And I have a bad feeling 600mb is not a typo.

I can almost guarantee that that 600 MB is correct. I am in fact suprised at the small footpoint of this project. The stellar atmosphere codes that I write and use require 2+GB of RAM, and many GB of disk storage. And those aren't even global type
simulations.

But I agree with the believe-it-when-I-see-it mentality, Ken.
