I am at a complete loss for ideas here. I have checked every BIOS setting available and found nothing that I can see that would be causing this. I found a thread from a while back that had a fix for windows 2k but not one for Windows XP. Any Ideas???

In Device Manager, expand Computer and what does it say? If it isn't ACPI Uniprocessor PC then I *think* you have to reinstall Windows with the ACPI HAL, or kernel, or whatever they call that doohickie.

You can manually force a HAL by pressing the... F5 key, I think, at the screen where Windows Setup is prompting to press F6 for the SCSI driver floppy option. A little ways further in Windows Setup, it should offer you a choice.

Another option... AndyHui has a FAQ that you could look at. The part of interest is right down at the bottom.
f your system has been installed with the Standard HAL, you can still enable APM (although APM and ACPI are mutually exclusive). APM support allows Windows 2000 and Windows XP to perform a soft shutdown of your system. To enable APM:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Power Options.
  2. Click on the APM tab.
  3. Check the Enable APM check box.

Oh great guru of all encompassing computer knowledge, bless us with your perfect understanding of all wisdom. This should be an easy one for someone of your vast and infinite computer knowledge.

/sarcasm off

The guy asked a question cause he didn't know where to turrn. It's what these forums are for, right? No need to be an a$$ and insult him. I guess you popped out of the womb with a perfect knowledge of all computers? Somehow I doubt it...

And leave the being an asshole to a guy who had a question about a problem he's having with a system he succesfully built to blazer.

Anyway, not to flame. If you hit F7 while installing XP that will disable ACPI/APM installtion, if you used a Serial-ATA or SCSI driver and needed to press F6 you might have done this by accident (I did once, man that sucked)

An XP repair will reinstall the proper drivers/kernel that you need.. I hope this takes care of your issue.

Take Care,

Well I ddint' build the machine for one. I work at data doctors and the client built the system and brought it to us when she fvcked it up. We fixed everthing else but now I pretty much know that she just fvcked up the xp install too. Can't say it surprises me.
