Client box disconnects from net frequently- help

Linksys NIC- connected to external cable modem
Sygate software home office 3.5 (I know I need to upgrade)

The client can connect to the net but loses its connection often and then reconnects itself (eg, AOL IM- will reconnect on its own after a few min). The internet on the server is running fine.

Any ideas? I'm fairly new to all this, and consider an intermittant connection without calling anyone a huge victory. 😀

Please dummy down any replies that have lots of numbers and codes 😉. Thanks
