Hey Anandtechers-

Not too long ago one of my harddrive started to make this aweful clicking nose, yet it still worked. I looked around the next and I found that when a harddrive starts to make weird clicking noises that is a sign of emminent failure. Also, when windows started booting very slow... windows would popup but it would get frozen for about 3-4mins then everything would work fine. Weird eh? The drive stopped making the clicking sounds about a week after it started.

Anyhow, I bought a new WD HD 60gig for $60... put it in today, started formating it and while it was spinning up it started to make these weird clicking sounds. I haven't had a brand new drive or any other drive than these two ever do this... I'm hoping the new one will stop doing it.

You guys/gals ever had any experiences like this? tia.

different drives will make different noises, but if its a truely loud clicking it shouldnt do that. did the drive fall on the floor before you put it in the case ? :p i would take it back to where you got it.
would be a strange coincidence but its possible.

Ugh, I hate hard drives.. seems like you are not safe with any single HDD brand.. they always are the worst pieces for overall reliability.
I've had best luck with Fujitsu in the past, I've seen one or more of all other brands fail.. although next lowest failure rate would be Seagate.

anyway it started that clicking about a year later and its bad clusters

since then I haven't TOUCHED WD (Maxtor=good) but i'm trying WD again with thei Special Edition Caviers

I've had terrible luck with Maxtor, only ever seeing 1 WD fail.. 10gb 5400 RPM drive.
