Clicking sound when braking?

My girlfriend has a 2002 Saturn Coupe. When you apply the brake and bring the car to a stop, there is a fairly loud clicking noise. As soon as you hit the gas or take the car out of gear(put it in neutral or park) the noise goes away. Any ideas as to what this is? I assume something with the brakes?

Thanks for the help.

first thought is CV joints.

I don't think so... we can try that though. You don't usually turn the wheel when sitting at a stop sign 🙂 If the car is moving and the wheel is turned, we don't hear it.

Thanks for the response.

P.S. My girlfriend says she likes your bunny 😉

It clicks once, or is it continuous like "click-click-click-click" until the car stops?

It continues to click-click-click-click until you either take your foot off the brake, or until you put it in park or neutral. The clicks don't seem to be too loud until the car has been driven for ~5 min.

He's sporting a pancake. 😉

In all seriousness it could be a ton of different things and I'm no mechanic. Rotors are more of a grinding noise, although depending on mileage and driving you could definately need some brake work if it hasn't been done (pads and now you're chewing into the rotors).

I'm still betting on CV joint - the fact that you don't hear it in neutral kinda points in that direction. Again, I'm not a mechanic...just guessing.

lol @ the pancake on his head. I didn't even notice that. 🙂

She's done all the usual maintenance @ the dealer... although I'm trying to convince her to take this one to a meineke(one that I've used successfully many times). Is the CV joint an expensive repair? You wouldn't think it'd be the brakes since it's a constant clicking, even when you're stopped. I'm obviously no mechanic either though.

depends on the car. I would think it would cost around $200.

Yes, if you do not fix this, then you could also need to replace the axel, which will cost $400 more.

do it anyways.....you guys are whipped.....and so am I😉

When the car is stopped, and it is still making the noise, it ain't the brake rotors or pads or cv joints. Could be the ABS system acting up, or exhaust heat shield. has to be something that is moving even when the car is stopped.

Yeah, it makes the noise when the car is stopped. What do those kind of repairs entail?

you first! 😀

The fact that the noise intensifies after the car is warm suggests that it is likely something mechanical, rather than electrical (shorted wire leading to a cycling relay, for example). Maybe a loose flywheel ==> torque converter bolt that loosens up a bit more once it gets hot? That's all I can think of ATM that could possibly click like that with the car stopped, in gear, and with the motor running...although I am not a mechanic.

Does the click frequency vary at all? And if so, what affects the frequency?
Not referring to pitch here, just click rate.

Also can you still hear the noise when you take your foot off the brake pedal (with it still in gear)?

Not really, once the car starts rolling it seems to go away. We specifically tried that. We came to a complete stop, then just release the brake. After about 2 seconds of releaseing th brake, the sound went away. I'm guessing it has something to do w/ the car moving?

The frequency seems to stay about the same.

I don't hear it when the car is moving... only when the car is stopped. The frequency of the clicks seems to be the same.

Guys, this is not a brake or CV joint issue. It's either a transmission problem or you just have something loose, maybe an engine/transmission mount.

Which could be the problem, seeing as how she just had a head gasket replaced...
