My hard drive is making clicking and grinding sounds which are louder than normal and sound like they're damaging the drive.
What are signs of hard drive failure? Are these some of them?

Also, when I boot up it says "Disk error, Press any key to restart".

Thanks

It does not sound good..Backup immediately and run the drive man.'s utility on it, be aware that some fitness/diagnostic tests will wipe all data.
If it's still under warranty call for an RMA.

that means you're more intelligent than 90% of MSCEs.

has it always sounded like this? i've heard similar noises from some of my drives and they're still going strong years later.

No, it just started doing that when I was playing Diablo II, and it rebooted all of a sudden. I'm pretty sure the hard drive died then.
I know clicking and grinding, and these aren't normal clicking and grinding.

This is an old HD BTW, 6GB Western Digital. It's not even mine, it is my friends drive. I'm going to tell him to buy a new one.
