Click it or ticket

I went to Wal-Mart during my lunch today and as I'm pulling into the entrance I see 2 cops standing in the roadway. I'm wondering if there was an accident or something going on. I pull up and roll my window down. cop says hi and says they're doing a seatbelt check.

he sees me wearing my seatbelt and says "glad to see you're wearing your seatbelt." I say "yes, I wear it all the time." He then asks me for my driver's license so he can see my driver's license number. He writes it down and then hands me this little Click it or ticket card that has info about the law and says I can go ahead. although I can't because the other cop has the car ahead of me still stopped and the cop that talked to me has another one pulled over in the lane next to me.

Why would they need my license number if they're just checking to see if people are wearing their seatbelts? is it just to show how many people they checked or something?

I'm going to guess that the warning cards were the only info cards they had, so they were handing them out. As for why the license # was requested, I have no idea...maybe there's some weird laws over there, but I don't think that would fly in NH. Granted, 18+ doesn't need a seatbelt here..

the fact that they can pull you over and issue a ticket for not wearing the seatbelt AT ALL is what pisses me off. I know...there are dangers in not wearing the seatbelt, but there are certain types of accidents where the seatbelt would CAUSE more damage than not wearing one.

Besides, most municipailites are not concerned with your safety, etc--ticket revenue is simply a source of income for the governing agency in that area. If they truly cared, the money would be invested into something worthwhile and not factored into the budget.

In FL, you can't be pulled over for not wearing your seatbelt, but only get a ticket for not wearing it if they already pulled you over for speeding, expired tag, malfunctioning lights, etc.

Not true...that is a myth. They can stop you for not wearing your seatbelt solely. This was effective summer of 2005.

I probably would have asked why they needed my license before handing it over.

Last I checked your windshield is pretty see-through and most cars since the mid 70's have shoulder belts.

That is a national or Florida state law? Do you have a link? I don't doubt you, but just curious since I was pretty sure it was this way in Kansas too. I always hear the radio commercials that say"if you get pulled over and you're not wearing you seatbelt, you could get an additional fine...."
