I recently downloaded CleverCache from here:

My system at work has 2 problems - it only has 256MB of RAM and virus scanning scans every file when it's opened. CleverCache, which claims to reduce the size of the windows file cache, improved the performance so much that it really feels like a different system. I don't have to wait 30 seconds anymore while the disk thrashes.
So, I have two questions. First, are there any free programs that do the same thing? And also, why does Windows (I'm running win2k) do a really crappy job of handling the file cache? It seems to cache EVERYTHING and just not ever give it up.
