WARNING: SPOILERS
I saw it on opening night, and I must say I wasn't too impressed. In the week prior to the movie's opening, I kept finding Kevin Smith everywhere I went. Clips from "An Evening With Kevin Smith" suddenly showed up on YouTube, and I subsquently went out and bought the DVD to watch, and I was impressed. However, something I noticed throughout that movie and through almost all of the interviews with Smith was his focus on the dialogue. When someone asked him about the cinematographic style of his movies (namely, there was't one), he said he mainly wrote for dialogue. When he was talking about writing the Superman movie, he said "I'm a dialogue writer," explaining the 80-page outline that was supposed to be 4. Clerks was an amazing movie, not because of the quality or the acting, but because of Smith's dialogue.
And Clerks II doesn't have it. Sure, the LOTR part was hilarious, if a bit late and forced. Also, the jail cell speech was CLASSIC Smith. Even the part where Silent Bob's cue comes up and he's got nothing: perfect. However, the rest of the movie is sorely lacking. The first half of the movie is aimless, searching for a purpose to exist. Throw in a random musical number that, while somewhat funny, came completely out of nowhere and had no relevance whatsoever, and then we actually get into the movie. Dante's relationship with the manager (can't remember her name) seemed extremely forced, and while it's nice that Smith didn't try to beat us over the head with the details, the way it progressed was extremely confusing. And while there weren't many obvious throwbacks to the other movies (a mixed bag if you ask me), things like dancing on the roof (simply because of the hockey thing in Clerks) and Ethan Suplee + Jason Lee's return (but not as Banky or the Boat dude [William or Willow I think?]) were okay, but probably in bad judgment.
That said, Smith said he made the movie he wanted to make. Can't fault the guy for that. I just wish he would have focused on the dialogue, 'cuz that's what made Clerks. I'm a big Chasing Amy/Jersey Girl fan, both considered to be "non-Smithesque" films, and they're good in their own right. However, I can't help but feel that Clerks II SHOULD have been a Smith-esque movie, and there, I think it failed. All that aside, it was still an enjoyable movie- just not up to the Clerks II moniker imho.
