A lot of celebrities don't look that great when they're not done up: http://celebritytoob.com/pictures/3...res-of-celebrities-without-makeup/item/36166/

Being a rich person, Cleopatra probably had the luxury to make herself look nice every day.

Probably. Like most people in power, she was likely average or plain at worst. It's not like it mattered as much when you aren't an elected official who has to appear on camera. Back then, if you were a commoner and close enough to tell that your ruler on a bad dat didn't quite look like a potentially flattering image or engraving of him/her, it's not like you would call them out on it to their face. Maybe you'd whisper it to a friend a little later, perhaps. :D

Cleopatra was not the goddess that most people thought. In reality, she was actually quite ugly. We know this because her image is on ancient Egyptian currency. :(

What utter bollocks!...how do you know the image on the currency is accurate?

I don't think we do. It's hard to accurately portray figures even on machined coinage today, let alone back then when there's often a set style or conventions for depicting rulers that sacrifices accuracy for tradition. I think the more we have of art like busts, murals, pottery, etc representing a figure and from different artists, the more likely it is the "average" image can be believed to be a good one.

Even then, it's not the same as having a mummy (as in the case of more than a few very well preserved Pharaohs) where we have something "real" to compare it to.

In absence of photographs, only life/death masks are going to be accurate. Cleopatra never had a life/death mask made, unlike Caesar.

In the very least, the George Washington portrayed on US currency is right on the money. ;)

Television doesn't have many good educational or news programs anymore. Online lectures, podcasts, articles, studies, and of course books (or audio books) are all better. The few decent channels with actual history or educational material (besides public television) usually are on the more expensive cable packages, and it's just not worth it to get/keep those channels.

Everything good is going to the web or soon will be, anyway, especially with CBS and HBO's decision paving the way for more a la carte, streaming-only options in the future.
If I want to watch anything that relates to History I will go to You Tube. They have pretty much everything I need. Even the more obscure stuff. Last night, I was watching the Civil War and the death count. I hardly ever watch TV.

The show I watched on Cleopatra said that when the Egyptians and Romans released coins they made sure that the images represented were very accurate. The show was called "Ancients Behaving Badly- Cleopatra."

Good show.

You do realize this was a marble bust we are basing this off of right? That is not exactly an accurate depiction of what anyone looked like.

The bust is one of the first things we usually look at when meeting a girl anyway, right? ;)

So... does every coin of cleopatra look identical, do they happen to only have one, or do they have 500 different ones and do they happen to 'know' that this one was the one made accurately?

I like how your own link never makes such a claim:
Quote:
Cleopatra may have been beautiful, ugly, or somewhere in between. Certainly, she was intelligent, a good diplomat, and queen of an area important for Rome, so it is no wonder that leaders of Rome like Caesar and Mark Antony, would fall in love with Cleopatra, while another Roman leader, Octavian (the future Emperor Augustus), would fear and revile her.

So she was basically like Hilary with the manjaw. Made a leader of the free world somehow fall in love with her (Bill) and other leaders fear and revile her (all GOP).

Cleopatra slept with a lot of powerful men so she could get into power. She also had her sister, father and brother murdered. Hillary doesn't even come close.

Nobody comes close today, because you couldn't get away with what she did.

Why she was attractive according to Monty Pithon.

"How do you know which one is the King?"

"Hes the one what aint got sh*t all over him".
