Clearification of TheGameBox.Net and .Org

I bought two domains a little while ago for two reasons. Because .com was taken, and because I knew about what is about to happen back then. So I am posting here to clearify what is going on.

Soon, TheGameBox.Net will no-longer be associated with TA/SO. It will become the public server, where I will be doing most of my work, and holding most of the games/mods/updates/whatever. Now it would be pretty unfair of me to do this with your hardware being that the deal is that I don't own it. 🙂 So heres whats happening.

TheGameBox.Net
This is the public box for ad's and doing work on. All games will be open to the public, and it will run quite a few servers.

Hardware. Motherboard: This is the MSI dual CPU with raid board. Click the link for more info, but I needed a board that could do P-3's, more then 1/2 gig of ram, and have fast I/O.

Hard Drives: For now I will be running 3x60 gig maxtor 5400 ATA 100 drives. They will be setup in raid 5 config, so that we will have 120 gig usable.

Case: 3u20ATX300 or click here for the pictures link. This case is a rack mount ATX 19 inch black server case. Should be able to handle what we need.

CPUs: Dual P-3 750's. 1 goes up to 1ghz, the other 885mhz. We will be running both of these at 750 for now.

Ram: 2x 256 meg PC-133 micron dimms. I got a good deal on them, so there is 512 meg's of ram in the server.

Network: I will be trying to use my Dual Intel EEpro nic, and see if that will work well in that box.

Really those are all the details on the hardware for the new box. Now for those that you really should know.

TheGameBox.Org

Tyan Tiger 100 is the motherboard. The BP6 and 1 cpu is acting very funny, so I need to test them more to find out what is wrong. We currently have 1 cel 366 CPU at 366mhz. I don't want to over clock it due to it's stability.
We have 512 meg's of ram, and we have 2x40 gig mirrored, and 2x10 gig mirrored for drive space.

We could really use at least 1 more CPU at 366 mhz, or maybe two new CPU's. Both are options. This box is all your hardware, and will be under your control if it breaks, or you want upgrades. I host it, and manage the IP/OS/Box, but when we need money for parts, or need faster items. It's up to the team.

Any Questions feel free to ask here, or on the GB forums.

A couple questions and comments:

Does the Promise RAID controller on the MSI support IDE RAID5 nowdays, or is that accomplished through Linux wizardry? Just curious.

What revision is the Tiger100? Rev. F supports all Slot1 100MHz-based P3's up to 850MHz. Rev. E and prior support up to a Katmai 600MHz P3.

Regarding the "private" GameBox, there is the question of how much use it will be getting. At the moment, a crazed mob forms on the IRC channel and we all pile into *one* server. Maybe with Q3A and Counterstrike and (heaven help us) Descent3 available, we would actually have more than one server running at once, but so far it seems like we don't. I was running a UT server for charrison and Osmo yesterday and CPU utilization was sitting at 1% to 2% with peaks approaching 10%, and that was a Cel400 on 66MHz FSB. So the question is this: how many servers do you envision running at once? What is the amount of CPU power needed to handle it? Can we start with what we have and pass the plate later for a pair of P3's if it gets to that point?

If we limit the "private" GameBox to just two UT servers (customizable) and two Q3A servers (customizable), and don't let that one Descent3 fiend 😉 play except from 2AM to 4AM, I daresay one CPU might be enough, what do you guys think? With that in mind, I could trade my healthy Cel466 for the 366 if desired. With the Tyan Tiger100, physical space becomes an issue if there are two CPUs, and I have firsthand experience with that. I could swap heatsinks to help with that. I have a Taisol whose fins are oriented so that it can have the fan mounted on the side of the heatsink, downdraft-style like an Alpha 3125. The trade won't really affect me, since that CPU is for my "work" computer and the performance of the CPU is not very critical.

Obviously a Cel466 is not going to overclock to the 100MHz bus, that would be over 700MHz. I think it's best to stick with default clock speed and get something faster if necessary.

(ok, netscape died on me on my first try at this reply, we will try it again)

The raid will be controlled by Linux on 2 Maxtor (promise) ata 100 IDE cards.

As for the Tyan board, ask Jatwell, I bought the board from him. If I remember correctly it does, but I could be wrong. If I need to check the board, I have to down the server to be able to get into the case to check.

Your right on the CPU usage. The problem is when a game fails to stop correctly, or it goes "run away" where it uses all the CPU. All other games suffer. D3 is a BIG offender of this. 🙂. We could probably work off of one CPU, but I would recommend 2 still. But, it is up to you guys. 🙂

If nothing else, that would get Adul's unused Cel366 cracking in its spare time 🙂 LMK if you need that Taisol heatsink/fan unit for the rear CPU, I can send it over.

Ok, if you guys want to do that, then lets go ahead and do that. The address is going to be this.

Attn LD (Chris Grahn)
51 East, 400 South, Suite 200
Salt Lake City UT, 84111

That is my work address, and if sent there, I know someone here will pick it up, and it won't get stolen.

All right, and I have a nice MSI slocket that is dual-ready if you need one, LD. It doesn't support Coppermines but PPGA Celerons are no problem. LMK.
