ClearType is subpixel rendering of fonts to improve screen readability

display options > appearance > effects, IIRC.

Clear type you mean?

It's made for LCD displays so it would be easier to view the text. I used to use it with my CRT but it hurt my eyes after a while.

Really? I use it on my CRT monitor and I think ClearType makes it look better... everything is rounded and easier on the eyes...

Placebo effect. It's just making it blurrier.

Different monitors display text differently. It may be blurrier on your monitor and it may increase readability on his. Additionally there are more ClearType settings than just on and off to tweak it as you see fit....
