Cleaning walls

I've got nice white walls throughout my apartment, not much covering them, and I've done a pretty poor job keeping them clean the past two years (I'm single, live alone, I don't care much). I'm finally getting around to doing it, I know there's a lot of dust and whatnot on them. What's the best way for cleaning them and not damaging the paint? I'd rather not have to sponge them down or something, can I use a very fine mop head and some soapy water, and just lightly go over them? Is there some special way of cleaning walls that I don't know about?

Depending on the kind of paint it is the mop may leave water stains...

Mr. Clean magic eraser is your friend for marks on the wall. Try that and some static cling cleaners to remove the dust - swiffer & such.

I wash walls before painting them with a sponge mop. Don't get them too wet....wring the sponge out well, wash, then wring the sponge out again and wipe off excess.

Yeah I was thinking just a damp mop, not like soaking wet or anything. There's some spots behind and above furniture it'd be hard to reach by hand, hence the handle of a mop being very useful. I'll try it out in a non-visible spot and see what happens 🙂
