Cleaning up VHS to DVD transfers?

I have to transfer my sister's wedding from VHS to DVD and have a deck that does the actual conversion, but wonder if there's a way to clean it up using either hardware of software.

Not anything that I would trust. VHS has pretty poor resolution to begin with. If you think of what a poor job those software programs do that advertise to "clean up" old photographs, then add the element of motion, and I wouldn't expect much.

You can use final cut pro to manually edit out artifacts frame by frame but that's too tedious.
