Cleaning up my Coolermaster Wavemaster

Wonder if you guys can give me some pointers. I love my Wavemaster, but a couple of its features have led to quite a mess of cabling. I want to clean it up in preparation for installing some better cooling.

The case has one 80mm fan in the rear, and two 80mm fans mounted below the drive bays in the front. There are also two LEDs mounted in the front that give it a blue glow. I don't really care about these, but they do look nice.

Here's the thing: For some reason they led each of the two front fan leads out and connected it to a 4-pin molex connector. They then have a second 4-pin molex connector chained on to that one. So for the two front fans there are four molex plugs and a bunch of wire hanging around up front.

Then there are the LEDs, each of which has a similar arrangement. That's eight molex plugs.

There are four fan headers in the mobo (GA K8NS Ultra-939). The cpu and chipset fans are connected to two of them. The rear fan is connected to SYS_FAN, but has to stretch over the heatsink because this header is on the far side. I can solve that by plugging in an extension and leading it up and around the chassis.

The remaining header is called PWR_FAN. Not sure what it is for, but because of the molex plugs on the front fans I am not using it. Instead I have these plugged into a single cable from the PSU with a molex plug, and then I daisy-chained them. It's horrible 🙂.

What I would like to do is cut off the molex plugs and splice some 3-pin fan plugs on there, then lead a single lead over to PWR_FAN. Do you think I can safely plug two 80mm fans into that header? As an alternative I could use one of the Antec 480s fan-only plugs and cables.

The other question is the LEDs. I don't know what voltage these run, but I could just match the pins they are connected to, so it doesn't matter. But I would rather not have a second cable running up to the PSU to connect the LEDs. Think I can chain these off the supply to the front fans? I don't know if I'll have the right voltage if I use the Antec fan-only cables.

Last question: is there any advantage to using the PWR_FAN header on the mobo as opposed to the fan-only line out of the Antec.

Thanks!

The pwr_fan header is there to allow you to monitor the psu's fan speed only. Most do not allow PWM control like with SpeedFan. Need to make sure that you don't pull too many watts off of these 3pin headers with your fans. It can fry the headers themselves. Check your mobo specs to make sure the total wattage pull for the 3pin headers are not exceeded. Fan specs are needed for this as well. *EDIT...your last Q....Advantage probably lies with using the Antec "fan only" connector as this allows the psu to control fan speed according to load.

Thanks, JB. I don't think I will mess with PWR_FAN then. I'll just take it off the fan-only connector to the Antec. Probably don't want to run the LED's off that same line then, since the current will vary according to what fan speed the PSU is calling for. Think that would be an issue?

Yeah, I have that PSU and case, and I also run the front fans off the fan-only connector, and it works well for quieting down those fans, but I'm not at all sure that the psu actually adjusts the fan speeds; I think it just runs them at 5v. As for the led's up front, you can get some led four pin connectors at frozencpu.com and then get some different colored led's if you want. Just trim the led's and plug them in. I replaced mine with white ones, and it looks fantastic.

The LED's would just dim and brighten a little depending on your psu load. May be kinda cool lol.🙂

Well....wouldn't 5V be a different fan speed than 12V. Isn't that adjusting its speed? 😕 lol 🙂
