Cleaning oil and old thermal compound from CPU/HS(from my fingers)

What should I use to clean off stuff like oil from touching it, and old thermal pastes, off of heatsinks and cpu surface?

I have some ethanol, but I heard people say I am supposed to use Isopropyl Alcohol?

THanks

Isopropol works for me. I woudln't bother with stuff like Arctic Cleaner and stuff - generally it's overrated. Just remmber to use high purity Isopropol and a bunch of q-tips (usually takes me 30-40 minutes to perform a full cleaning).

It might, but isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol is what most people use. Just get the highest concentration you can get. Most stuff is 70% but I managed to find 91% at CVS.

^-- me too. CVS Brand 92% (or 91) is what I found. Question: Is there an expiration date on all this? I saw (not home right now) a date on the back of the CVS thing.....

There's a date on the bottle but I would still use it if it was "expired." No big deal unless it's years past the date.

That's the same thing I use. The only thing I might add is a plastic scraper of some sort is useful in getting the bulk of thermal pads off (the heatsink not the processor) before you use the alcohol.

along with isopropol i also use unbleached coffee filters...zero lint. they also come in very handy to set a proc or HSF in it with grease on it or grab a couple to clean up with.
