Cleaning off that new PC

So I just bought one of the $400 laptops from Walmart this morning... This is actually my first not-built-by-me-PCs... what is the best way to get all that extra crap off? Can I reformat and install ONLY the OS from the Compaq recovery discs?
 
Am I better off taking a copy of MCE2005 and installing it with the product key on the bottom of my laptop?
