cleaning ink off an lcd

So I was working in front of my computer the other day and accidentally tapped my ballpoint pen on the screen. It left a black dot and now I can't seem to get it off. I've tried both water and klear screen (the Apple stuff) and it still won't go away after multiple applications. Is there anything that will take this off?! I don't want to have ruined my perfect dead pixel-free NEC 1760V 🙁
 
Ethyl (rubbing) alcohol or acetone (nail polish remover)? One or the other of those will remove just about anything. They might cause problems if there's an anti-glare coating on the screen, though.

Less harsh would be, say 409/windex glass cleaner. "Klear Screen" might be the same stuff; never used it.

I was under the impression that rubbing alcohol and especially acetone are both deadly for LCDs. Windex/409 will work but they are not safe for LCDs either.

I know of this recipe but I don't have any household chemicals as I live in a dorm, so I'm looking for a product. Honestly when I bought the klear screen stuff I thought it was that stuff.
 
Yeah -- on second thought, if the screen is some sort of plastic, acetone would eat through it. I'm stuck in CRT-cleaning mode. 😉 But rubbing alcohol? It's pretty nonreactive... though it might take off the anti-glare coating. Not sure about windex. Maybe you should try calling up the manufacturer?

You don't have rubbing alcohol and water? I lived in a dorm for 4 years, and neither of those is what I'd call an esoteric ingredient. 😛

hehe I just don't happen to have any isopropyl alcohol laying around, haven't had a need for any yet. If I have to go out and buy something it might as well be something guaranteed to work.

Isopropyl alcohol is less than $2 for a bottle, closer to $1. You'll need some eventually if you want to clean a heatsink or cpu, or if you want to prep a surface for vinyl dye.
