Acetone is also effective (with an afterwash of alchohol). I also find cooking the heatsink (plastic removed of course) makes removal easy, though I don't know what effect it might be having in terms of getting the goo deep into the grooves and stuff.

I agree with the Lighter Fluid method. Some chemicals leave a residue and fill the pores in the heatsink.
