Cleaning grill grates

Kelemvor

Lifer
I have a grill that has the main grilling surface on the bottom and then has 2 wire racks above that for keeping things worn. I seldom use the other racks but we are having a party in 2 weeks so I'm sure I'll need them. Problem is they are very rusted and really crappy looking.

What product or something can I use to clean them?

I tried a brillo pad which seemed to work a bit but that'd take forever getting all the little grooves. Is there anything to soak it in or spray on them or anything like that to get the grates clean?

Thanks!

Drop it in some sandy dirt and rub it around a while... with your feet if you want. Works great for free, and nearly effortless.

Oven cleaner works fine but, rust is a problem. Even if the rust is cleaned off. the racks will continue to corrode. I have had success on my home built grills using high temp engine paint. Redo about once a season.
