Cleaning fireplaces....taking suggestions (Peeks Inside!)

The back wall on the inside of my fireplace is SOLID black (no, not a racist comment). I tried some soapy water, then bleach in water, but both made a huge mess and no difference.

I realize it will never get 100% clean but I'd like to at least see brick again.

Will oven cleaner do the trick you think?

Any other suggestions before I unleash the oven cleaner fumes in my house?

Dirty Fireplace

they make fireplace cleaner, specifically designed to cut through soot and carbon...i know that the place where we bought our pellet stove had it, i'd assume you'd just need to call around and find some.

in other news, anyone want to buy a pellet stove?
