Cleaning dust lowered CPU temps by 7C!

My friend who has a Swiftech MCX462 today took off the fan only to find a thick layer of dust. He cleaned it off and screwed the heatsink back on the processor. Before the cleaning his average CPU under load temps where 52C, but now they are 45C, which is a 7C difference simply by taking the dust off and/or resetting the heatsink on the core. His case temps where the same at 27C. The processor by the way is a 1.33GHz Tbird.

I am willing to bet that it was resetting the heatsink on the core which made the biggest difference, but it could also very well be the dust as it would trap the heat to the heatsink. I am guessing more that it is a combination of both which made the difference.

Post any thoughts, experiences with this, etc.

I used some velcro with self adhesive backing inside the front bezel on my 840.
Then I buy regular heater filter material and cut it to cover the front fans under the bezel.
Works great and very easy to replace with new filter material.

It will help quite a bit but I still have to blow it out every 3-4 months.
Even with changing the filter ever month. Amazing how dirty those
filters get after only 3-4 weeks.

It's pretty amazing what a little dust will do! I've been running an SLK-800a for about 3 weeks, and I've already blown it out with compressed air twice after noticing a rise in temps. This is in a Lian-Li with a decent filter setup on the intakes. The filter gets cleaned on a weekly basis, also..

Antec sells filters that slip in the gap between the from bezzle and the intake fans. Last time I checked it was $5.95 and it is washable. I didn't have the money at the time so I didn't order it. :(
