Cleaning a petrol can.

I have a plastic petrol can that i used yesterday that i need to clean out to store away. I'm not quite sure to clean it though. I'm hesitant to just clean it with washing-up liquid and empty it down the kitchen sink?

What are you supposed to do with it?

Take it outside and leave the cap off for half a day.
That will get most, if not all the vapors out. Then just
wash it out with soap & water .. Drain and let sun dry it.

Yea i left it outside overnight. Still smells strongly of it though which is something i dont want in my house. Guess the amount still there is negligable and will be ok down the drain.
