I have a 3 piece cream color leather sofa set that a got a few months ago. I now the seats and backs in some areas were dark (black between the leather pattern cracks). I tried everything to clean them, including leather cleaner and other store bought leather products. Finally I was cleaning my living room when I tried to spary pure ammonia in an hidden spot. I found it did no damage, so I when for one of the seats.

It did a hell of a job. The leather seems softer and the cream color has came back. Two of the piece look pretty much brand new???? My question is has anybody tried this. I'm using the ammonia from walmart (1.70 a bottle)?

[q]5) Um. It's still there. Hmmm. You may need the help of a professional, but as a last resort (and I do mean LAST) try pure ammonia. Now, ammonia is leather's worst enemy, but damn does it clean just about anything. If you do use this, apologize profusely to the leather with a lot of neatsfoot oil afterwards. Same application method - a barely damp sponge and lots of rubbing.

try pure ammonia
I think he means use ammonia straight out of the jug, without diluting it further. Household ammonia is actually ammonia dissolved in water at roughly 5-10% concentration. And, if my chemistry isn't too rusty, technically, it's ammonium hydroxide.

Anyway, I use 3 cleaners for household cleaning: ammonia, bleach, and orange-glow (I love the way the latter removes all fingerprints, smudges, etc., from stainless steel appliances.) If you use ammonia on fabrics like leather though, I'd think you would want to treat them afterward.

Yes, I had a cream leather sofa as well that was very dirty. I cleaned it with ammonia mixed with water and it looks brand new now. Incredible. Afterwards I rubbed body lotion into it to feed it. Very happy with it.
