Wow, I installed a new motherboard and processor a few days ago and I was shocked and disgusted at what I saw when I opened up my case  I have not had a reason to open it up for close to a year so I expected some dust build up, but damn! it was thick, on the front I have two fans sucking air in and the grill/case in front of the fan had close to a quarter inch of build up :disgust: same thing on the back where I have two fans blowing out, it was nasty, I cleaned it up using a canister vac and when I was done I had a lump of dust about the size of a hard drive! :(:disgust::|:Q:frown::confused:

You haven't been inside your case in nearly a year? :Q

Doesn't that violate at least one, if not several, requirements to remain a member-in-good-standing at AnandTech? :D

yeah even if i have no reason, i just poke around in mine when i'm bored. i dont get too much dust anymore though, i only have a slow fan @5v on the cpu and the psu fan, no other fans, and a totally open case...but the hsf does get dusty, nothing else tho.

I think most all Platinum Members clean out inside their case at least twice a year.

I use furnace filter material on the front of the case between the shroud and the chasis. With two intake fans on the front of the case and two exhaust in the back the dust buildup is minimal as long as I clean the filter every month or so;)

I normally, or try to, at least open mine once a month. We got a cat around and it's amazing how much of that dust is the same shade of grey as the cat. Wonder why?

Little grey hairs all in the fan blades and PSU.

I think I should be a platinum member then. Well actually, I usually build myself about 2 PCs a year. I don't belive in upgrades. I just build another one when something new comes out that I just gotta have. That and building a friend a PC at least once a month.

My first computer, a Dell Pentium 2, had enough hair inside it after a year I could have built a cat from it. I have since moved on and learned the error of my ways.

even with fan intake filters which I clean regularly, there's a buildup of dust inside the case!

Maybe u guys need to vacuum every once in a while. I've had my computer for 2 years with a 120mm intake fan on the front, 2 80mm fans blowing out and there has never been a build up of dust on the inside. The floor of my computer has never had any visible dust on it..

I suppose that the 120mm fan is blowing madly over the mobo and panels that dust can't build up.

My machine is usually pretty dust free, but I give it a quick run over with the hoover every couple of months. I have fan filters on all the fans which help a LOT. I've also found putting my PC on a woodern board on the carpet, rather than directly on the carpet seems to help reduce dust buildup for some strange reason.
