I'm looking for some good classical music. I want some real "powerful" compositions, with soaring strings and crashing cymbals, none of that wussy "Moonlight Sonata"-type stuff (although that is a very good piece) I've heard some stuff like what I'm looking for before, but I forgot who composed them. You know, real powerful, moving pieces with a sense of grandeur and height. Anyone know of any good pieces? thanx

Might try Shostakovich's 5th symphany, Beethovan 5 & 9, Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, Grieg's In the Hall of the Mountain King for warm-ups.

Mahler's pretty damn good for big-ass music. Rachmaninov's also great for powerful music skewed towards the romantic.

I would highly recommend Dvorak's New World Symphony, specifically the 4th movement. I would also encourage you to take a listen to Smetana's The Moldau from My Fatherland, without a doubt one of my favorite pieces. Also, if you like choral music Mozart's Requiem is also quite powerful.

Ahhh...

Just tried that at Live365 and all of a sudden I'm bombarded with ads :(
After that it's all good though :)

You lose a lot of the profundity of classical music when all you're hearing is the bombastic clash of cymbals, etc..

well, I dont want continuous cymbals, just for effect. I'm much more interested in the strings section (I love the sound)
