I need song suggestions and for instrument selection.

I'm getting married in a small ceremony (15 people total, including the musicians and photographer). My fiancee and I would like to have some music played in the background. We will hire two musicians to play for an hour or two.

We both like a good background beat. So we were thinking of a cello/violin duet or a bass/violin duet. But, the musicians that we contacted said it'll be far easier to find violin/violin duet music. Do you have suggestions of songs that might have a good bass line? Or would you really suggest a violin/violin duet?

The musicians said they can play anything that they can get sheet music for. What songs would you suggest? I don't want it specifically wedding music, but instead, I want upbeat fun music.

If it helps: my fiancee likes show tunes and songs from Sinatra or Buble. I like those oldies, but also I like some pop (especially slow balads from rock bands). We both enjoy classical music as long as it isn't too dissonant or two much like elevator music.

IMO, a cello will fill the space with warmth, yet not present itself in the fore with any conversation. I would absolutely go with a cello, whether paired with a violin or alone. Look at Bach's cello suites. Classy.

ps. Congratulations :)

Give some consideration to a jazz trio, or quartet. They can go from mellow to rockin' a bit easier than a classical group can.

Ditto on the congratulations :^)

lulz. you never cease to crack me up.

OP: I agree with trying to find some cello sound. As for classical with bass, Mahler was a big fan of the sound, though I'm not sure you'd want his stuff in a wedding....

Buddy of mine got married last summer and they had a pal strum some tunes on acoustic. Nice and laid-back. "Here Comes the Sun" is all I remember off the top of my head, but they chose a good mix of rock/jazz/classical that sounded really mellow on the acoustic.

You can't go wrong with bagpipes. They make every occasion fun :^)

Exactly!

On a serious note though, my wife and I had a single Cellist at our wedding and the first part of the reception. During the reception he played selections from Six Suites for Unaccompanied Cello by Bach, as DuffmanOhYeah mentioned above. It was much cheaper going the single musician route.
