"Classic" Windows theme resetting upon reboot.

I was going to post this in the software forum, but it seems to be more hardware related now. I just bought and installed a new 250g, 16mb cache SATA from WD. Performance is great and I haven't encountered any hardware issues yet, but I have notice that Windows is acting somewhat funny when installed on this HD.

I normally use the "Classic" Theme because I don't like all the eye clutter with the theme that comes default with WinXP. This keeps reseting to the WinXP one upon reboot. Not a critical issue, but extremely annoying. Just to test, I switched the boot drive back to the older PATA Maxtor that I was planning on using as a slave and did a restore with Ghost. When booting up with the PATA drive, the issue goes away.

On the surface, it appears that Windows is having an issue loading the desktop configuration properly when booting up with the WD and simply reverts to the default theme once Windows is finally loaded. The theme still actually says "Classic" under the properties when this occurs, but is actually using the "WinXP" one. Reseting will fix it, but once again, it reverts back with the next bootup.

For the time being, I'm staying with the Windows installed on the PATA since the performance difference is really not noticable, but would like to know if anyone else has encountered this issue before when I (eventually) do another reinstall on the SATA drive.

Weird. I have the same WD hd as you and I did use it as a boot drive for a bit. I didn't have the same issue you did, but I did have some other odd, but minor problems. Since I'm still having odd problems on my WD raptor, I'm going to assume that the HD is not the problem in either of our cases.

Can't say for sure that it is your hard drive, but run a WD diagnostic on it to see if it comes up with anything. BTW, your specs are very impressive. Nice rig.
