A Brief History of EmuReactor
EmuReactor was started by Nikeman_26 in April of 2001. He had little to no knowledge on how to start a web site, but with help from friends he had the site running smoothly around Sept 2001. I myself, tha_ninjalo joined EmuReactor about two weeks after the site opened up. I joined the forums, which back then, had only a few other members.
After a few months, not only was the site gaining recognition for delivering quality ROMs and Emulation news, little to no ads (especially no porn ads), and no forced voting, but also for the help that its community provided. Three main members, myself, Trentdaddy, and Sigilstun helped make the EmuReactor community THE place to go to for help on any kind of emulation.
The site started growing, and Nikeman_26 changed the site a couple of times not only to fit the demand of it's growing userbase, but also to fit the evolution of emulation itself. I then went on about a year and half hiatus, due to my ISP having to do some work in my area. I returned to see that EmuReactor had changed yet again, some things for the better, some things for the worse.
The community was in disarray. Trentdaddy was the only Mod and having a hard time. Sigilstun had his fill of things and left. On top of that Nikeman_26 was starting to feel burned out due to lack of help with upkeep on the site, plus the cost of running such a large site. Once I assured Nikeman that I was back for good, he made me a Mod in the forums.
With Trentdaddy's help, we soon started to regain control of the community, we then worked on bringing it back to the way it was when I had left.
A few short months after I came back, Nikeman_26 announced that he was thinking of shutting down the site. I was devastated, as was the emulation community as a whole. It seemed as though the best emulation site on the entire internet was going to disappear forever.
Then a miracle happened. Clark stepped in. He had been a member of EmuReactor for a few years, but wasn't active on the forums. He came out of nowhere and offered to buy the site from Nikeman_26. After quite a bit of discussion, a price was agreed upon, and Clark gained ownership of EmuReactor. I started to talk with Clark over AIM, and we became fast friends. I explained to him about the EmuReactor of old, and how I would like to see EmuReactor like that again. He agreed whole-heartedly, and said since I had been such a long time member and that I was so dedicated to the site, that he would name me Co-Owner.
So started the evolution of EmuReactor. At first, the community was very apprehensive about the "new management". People knew me, but they didn't know Clark, plus most of them, like myself, were emotionally tied to Nikeman_26, so some bad blood started to surface. After a few tense months, things calmed down and people started to see the vision that Clark and I had for EmuReactor.
Not long after Clark acquired Emureactor, LiquidChaos came onboard, offering coding services and other technical help. Clark and I accepted. We moved to a new server which became emureactor.info, and started to rebuild. Soon after we started making some radical changes, which some community members liked, and some didn't. First we added a new Forum, and we started fleshing out the ROM sections with more games. Second, we started to gain the trust of the community, especially once everyone started to see that the changes weren't to hurt EmuReactor, but to help it evolve into something more.
Now here we are. We Admins joke and call this EmuReactor Version 3, since this is our third revision in about a year. We know that this incarnation of EmuReactor isn't just a rebuild, it's a rebirth, or a total evolution you could say. EmuReactor is turning into something really, truly amazing, and we are glad to see that almost everyone stayed for the "long-haul". This is truly the second major step in EmuReactor changing into not only the best emulation site on the 'net, but into something more, an emulation community that anyone can be proud to be a part of.
I've been with EmuReactor for a long time, and I can honestly say that the last time I was this excited about this community was when I first joined. It will be a little rough at first, but stick with us, the best is yet to come.
Thank you for reading my little brief and revised history of EmuReactor, and share with us as we continue to add to EmuReactor's history and legacy while looking toward the future. Thanks for believing in us and staying with us, from myself and the rest of the EmuReactor staff.
